Leta 1989 je profesor za zgodovino drame na Akademiji za gledališče, film in televizijo Denis Poniž za zbirko Literarni leksikon prispeval zvezek, v katerem strokovno proučuje in predstavlja esej kot literarni žanr. V Videnjih in védenjih pa svojo strokovno vednost prenaša v esejistično formo. Zastavlja si vprašanja o svojih videnjih sveta in človeka, narave in živih bitij, literature in znanosti ter z izjemno razgledanostjo o pojavih bivanja, mišljenja in ustvarjanja, sočutjem do slehernega živega bitja, filozofsko osrediščenostjo na štiri Empedoklove snovne principe, predvsem pa s poudarjanjem etične razsežnosti človeka kot počela, s katero se človeštvo začenja in z odsotnostjo katere samo sebe izničuje, išče tudi odgovore nanje. S svojimi videnji in védenji razkrinkava sodobne družbene laži in manipulacije, od kapitalskih do medijskih, ter opozarja na pasti in nevarnosti nihilističnih ideoloških obrazcev. Poniževa drža vidca in vedeža nikoli ni avtoritarna, ampak esejistično obrnjena k drugemu in odprta za drugega, a nas vabi k premisleku s tako globino, širino in višino, da slutimo, kako postaja za nas vse zavezujoča, če v prihodnosti še želimo govoriti o slovenstvu, svetu in človeštvu.
