Beyme razlikuje nekoliko tipova političkih stranaka koji su obilježili pojedina razdoblja: honoracijske (kadrovske, elitne) stranke nakon prvog svjetskog rata zamjenjuju ideološke masovne stranke, a od pedesetih godina dominantne postaju narodne (pučke, catch-all) stranke. Prema profesoru Zakošeku temeljna teza Beymeove knjige jest da se od sedamdesetih godina razvija novi tip stranaka - profesionalizirane biračke stranke. One se javljaju u kontekstu promjena koje se očituju na više razina. Na razini birača dolazi do rastvaranja tradicionalnih socijalnih miljea što je rezultiralo raslojavanjem vrijednosnih orijentacija birača i smanjenim stupnjem stranačke identifikacije. U odnosu na prethodno na razdoblje, karakteristična je povećana apstinencija i volatilnost kod birača, osobito u fragmentiranim stranačkim sustavima novih demokracija u Istočnoj Europi.
