Catriona Menzies-Pike s trideset je prvi put obukla tenisice i počela trčati, a ubrzo su utrke na duge pruge postale njezina strast i najizazovniji životni cilj. Naime, u djetinjstvu je išla na popravni iz tjelesnog, rado se u rana jutra kreveljila džogerima, a knjige su bile njezino utočište nakon pogibije roditelja u zrakoplovnoj nesreći. Premda nitko nije vjerovao da će ostvariti svoj plan, njezina volja, upornost i želja da promijeni život odveli su je od parkova i plaža u Sydneyju do maratona u New Yorku. Uz strast za slobodom pokreta koja joj je pomogla da se pomiri s proživljenim traumama, počela je istraživati i nepoznatu prošlost ženskog trčanja. A borba za ravnopravnost u trčanju bila je uistinu duga, primjerice, na Olimpijskim igrama ženama do 1960. nije bilo dopušteno trčati u disciplinama duljim od 800 metara, a prvi je ženski maraton održan tek 1973. Na duge pruge jedinstveni je spoj povijesti ovog popularnog sporta i životne priče jedne trkačice koja svojim primjerom pokazuje kako prava strast savladava sve prepreke.
