Postoje mnogobrojna djela iz komunističkog perioda posvećena partizanskom pokretu, ali je ta literatura umnogome prevaziđena. Ova knjiga se ne bavi vojnom historijom partizana, čak iako se NOVJ redovno pojavljuje u zapisnicima i izvještajima KPJ-a i NOO-ova u vezi sa mobilizacijom novog ljudstva, snabdijevanjem hranom ili s djelatnošću vojnih sudova. Historija partizana predstavljena u ovoj knjizi je istovremeno politička i lokalna historija, usredsređena na regiju Bosanske krajine, koja otkriva političku praksu na koju se nailazi i u ostatku jugoslavenskog prostora. Činjenica da je Bosanska krajina glavno uporište partizanskog pokreta tokom Drugog svjetskog rata objašnjava njenu ulogu koja uveliko prevazilazi vlastite geografske granice.
